A good kitchen knife can make or break your meal prep as the sharper the blade and the better precision it cuts with the easier the end result will be. Trust us, you don't want to be slicing tomatoes with the wrong knife! Choosing the right knife to use can be overwhelming especially when there are different sizes. A cooks knife 20cm or a cooks knife 15cm? What is a paring knife for? Must I use a meat cleaver or can't I just use a cooks knife? We give you a quick rundown on which knife is best for what to help you select the ones you'll use the most.

Your needs will vary depending on your cooking skills and which dishes you love to serve up however these are what we think are the most essential and form the best baseline from which to build your knife wardrobe from.

PARING KNIFE

An essential tool in every kitchen. The paring knife is a small, thin knife made for fine cuts and easy maneuvering (like cutting fruit, peeling potatoes or trimming the ends off vegetables). Used for more delicate jobs that are often performed in the hand or on a board.

CHEF'S KNIFE

Every kitchen needs a chef knife - used for dicing, chopping, mincing or any other everyday cooking task. You'll use this knife the most often when preparing meals. The blade is generally large and has a slight curve in it to enable that rocking cut motion used by the professionals.

UTILITY KNIFE

The utility knife is in the middle of a paring and chef knife and is perfect for any task that is not delicate enough to require a paring knife but isn't quite big enough for a cooks knife. It's a great first knife to get used to but doesn't enable the rocking motion. You can get serrated or straight edge utility knives.

BREAD KNIFE

While with modern loaves already cut for us, it will make your life much easier to  slice bread, cakes and sandwiches to have a bread knife. Featuring a long blade with serrated edge which allows the blade to slice through thick crusts without crushing the soft interior.

 

MEAT CLEAVER

The only knife that is up to the difficult task of cutting through bone the Meat Cleaver, also known as the butchers knife has a large blade with a bevelled edge and is for those who love to cook hearty dishes like roasts or who love to create bone broth or stock from scratch.

The shorter the blade (especially with Cooks Knife) the easier it is to manage and learn how to use. We only sell premium quality knives that are beautifully made and crafted to last a lifetime.

To prolong the life of your knife it is not recommended to wash in the dishwasher - hand washing is best. Dry thoroughly and store flat.
