In The Spotlight: Bliss & Bonnie from Marble Basics
Meet Bliss and Bonnie Adams, a sister design duo hailing from Melbourne. A shared love of marble lead them to create Marble Basics, the popular homewares brand which specialises in 'marbelising' everyday, functional objects. We speak to the pair to find out more about working together, the current popularity of their favourite natural material, and glean some special marble care tips in the process.
1. You started Marble Basics as a sister team. What are your backgrounds?
Bliss: I studied Interior Design and Decoration, and have been working as an interior decorator for the past 3 years. Before that I had a desk job that wasn't creative at all, and I realised how much I missed being creative. Marble Basics has been a great outlet for us.
Bonnie: I studied a bachelor of Visual Arts and have always been creative and interested in design. I tried working in front of a computer all day and it just didn't suit me. Bliss and I have very similar ideas about design, as well as style which was really what formed our team.
2. Do you have an exact division of work or tend to tackle all aspects together? What are each of your roles?
Bonnie: At the moment we are both hands on with all aspects because we are running a small business. I deal more with manufacturing, and Bliss works with the business programs we use and the back of house administration to make sure everything runs smoothly. We both design everything that goes into production together.
3. Who is the dream Marble Basics buyer?
Bliss: Our dream buyer is anyone who appreciates marble as a natural material, as well as for its contemporary appeal and functional design. We pride our designs on being both beautiful and functional.
3. Marble is enjoying an extended moment in the spotlight, with the material used across many industries, fashion and art inclusive. Where do you see Marble Basics heading in the future?
Bliss: We see Marble Basics becoming the go-to brand for Marble accessories for the home. We also see Marble as a timeless, raw material, that will always have a place in the design world and in the home. The uniqueness of every product is really what makes the material so special.
4. What is the Marble Basics studio/office like?
Bonnie: The Marble Basics office is very simple, we work on a Calacatta Marble Table and are quite mobile for most of the day as we use laptops and are running around going to meetings. We also have our warehouse which is separate to our office.
5. What is the best way to care for marble products?
It is very simple; you can wash your marbleware with mild soap and water and dry it off with a towel. We use our Marble Basics products for many different kinds of food, however there a few you must be a little bit careful with. You shouldn't use acidic products like citrus, or products with dark pigments like spices or something like beetroot as it will stain, marble is porous so it just soaks it straight up like a sponge. All of our products can survive outside, so when treated correctly they are incredibly durable and can withstand many elements.
Marble Basics has arrived in store at Mildred&Co and is available in the wedding registry section of our website only, or by specific request.
