As the founder and creative grunt behind Auckland-based styling company One Lovely Day, Claire revels in turning the boring into brilliant. Her ideas are swiftly becoming in demand for many a wedding, baby shower, birthday celebration and eclectic store fit out, as she spins magic with props, lighting, foraged goods and antique curiosities. Her business is ever evolving, and alongside the styling, Claire has One Little Wagon - a gorgeous traveling caravan bar for hire - as well as her most recent addition, One Little Hire. A collection of bespoke furniture that can be hired for your next event, One Little Hire includes gorgeous neon signs, classic Bentwood stools, drum bar leaners, trestle tables and more. It's a welcome relief for those planning weddings in New Zealand - so often is the furniture available to hire lacking any character, with fairly limited options if you happen to be working within previously vacant spaces that are devoid of furnishings of their own.
Eager to find out more about this creative soul, we speak to Claire briefly, gaining insight into a world of interior styling.
- How did you become a wedding stylist?
I have always loved playing with spaces, whether it be interiors, the garden, floral arrangements, window displays or an event. I just love been able to transform a space, so I guess doing weddings was a natural progression of that. All my loves in one package - I get to play with the interior, exterior, the tables, the flowers, the bar, the lighting … everything!
- How would you describe your style?
I'd like to say adaptable. I love designing spaces that are a challenge, different and that I can transform into fabulous unique looks. But at the same time I have to make sure that the space also reflects the personality and style of the couple I’m creating for.
- What trends will we see for weddings this summer?
Relaxed and fun. This summer's weddings are all about creating spaces that guests can relax in rather than the traditional wedding structure our parents were accustomed to. So many of the couples I'm meeting now wish for a gathering, instead of a stiff 'reception'. A place where friends can catch up with friends, and everyone wants to eat, drink and celebrate together.
- What wedding look are you loving right now?
I have a love of quirky pottery, and it is rapidly taking over my cupboards…
- Describe your dream wedding?
Mine...I got married in Bali, with 30 of my favourite people. It was 10 days of absolute fun, and I had the foresight to have someone else arrange the whole thing … heaven.
