The uber creative Hayden and Lucy Burke from Louisiana Lucy sure know how to make beautiful weddings come together. Their custom furniture hire business - based in the mighty Bay of Plenty, was born out of a need for sleek and well designed furniture for events and wedding hire, and it is not uncommon for them to be booked up more than a year in advance.

Seeing a gap in the market, the pair knew there must be other couples out there like them, who wanted something different to what was currently being offered. Totally committed to sustainability, Lucy and Hayden work tirelessly to create their furniture using local, recycled timber and built by talented local craftsmen. And as well as their custom-made furniture, they also have a collection of cutlery, vintage rugs and festoon lighting to make all your wedding dreams come true.

So what sets them apart you ask? The pair pride themselves on providing not just a piece of beautiful furniture,  but an epic experience that you and your guests certainly won't forget. We chatted to them about what makes a special day and the importance of furniture in bringing it all together.

1. How would you describe the Louisiana Lucy Style?

Louisiana Lucy is simple and sleek is our design. We wanted our furniture to be the bones of the wedding day. To be the perfect canvas to create your dream day. Our clients see our furniture as a key part of their styling, not just a boring add on. They think carefully and hard about what will work and fit with their aesthetic.

2. Why are props and furniture so key at a wedding?

Furniture is the most important! You need to create an atmosphere for your guests to eat, drink and celebrate your love. And then props begin the process of creating a theme, or to bring your personalities to the forefront of the venue/space, allowing your guests to really feel the vibe of your special day.

3. What should a couple keep in mind when it comes to hiring furniture and props for their wedding?

Numbers are always a good start, especially if you are seating your guests for dinner or your ceremony. And from there, a vision of how you want your guests and yourselves to feel on the day. Do you want the day to be relaxed? Or formal? Whichever way you are leaning, that can determine your hire.

4. What is your absolute favourite wedding look right now?

I am dead keen on the tropical theme I am seeing at the moment. A lot of foliage, matte gold and a relaxed vibe. I am also loving the move away from the very popular 'rustic' look, to a more sleek, modern feel. A lot of wood, ceramics, foliage and pastel colours.

5. What do you love most about working in the wedding industry?

Definitely the most rewarding part of my job is meeting the incredible brides that I work so closely with. You build a relationship from the beginning and I have been so incredibly lucky to work with some of the most gorgeous, easy-going women. Louisiana Lucy seems to attract these types of personalities, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
